🌿 Chinese toon

Chinesischer Surenbaum
Toona sinensis (A. Juss.) M. Roem.
Toona sinensis is a fast-growing deciduous tree belonging to the mahogany family (Meliaceae). Its young leaves and shoots are edible and are widely used as a vegetable, particularly in East Asia. They have a distinctive aromatic flavour and can be eaten raw or briefly cooked. The leaves contain various vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein and bioactive plant compounds.

Notes

The young leaves and shoots are particularly valued as a food. Toona sinensis contains carotenoids, vitamins C, E and K, folate, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese and zinc, as well as polyphenols, flavonoids and other bioactive plant compounds. Some of these compounds have antioxidant properties.
